Chasing A Surf Title with Courtney Conlogue

Courtney’s Road to a Surfing World Title

Courtney Conlogue is the epitome of what surf training can do to take yourself to the next level in the water. She’s currently sitting at #4 on the Women’s Would Tour and potentially has a chance to win her first World Title. She’s also  racked up an impressive list of sponsors including Billabong, Swatch Watches and Rockstar energy drinks to name a few. The Conscious Connection team caught up with Courtney between surf sessions to learn what inspires her in the water and how you can take your own surfing to the next level.

Conscious Connection: It’s great to be with you Courtney! When did you first start surfing and what inspired you to stick with it?

Courtney Conlogue: I started surfing when I was four years old. I always love to go surfing and I think what has always inspired me to keep surfing is just the pure love for the sport. Whether I am in a jersey competing or just having a casual surf I always enjoy being one with nature. My dad passed on his love of surfing to all his children. It was something that the family did together every weekend and it made us extremely close. All the early mornings, salty hair, and smiles made surfing our family’s lifestyle.

Conscious Connection: How has athletic training impacted your surfing ability?

Courtney Conlogue: Training has impacted my surfing a ton. I have been doing workouts since I was four years old in my martial arts class. Then I was on a swim team as well till I was 12 years old. Through my high school years I did track and field and cross-country. I feel all of these sports have affected the way I surf today. Having the foundation of training and competing in all these different sports gave me a lot of knowledge about training and various ways to be a strong athlete whether it was to have great speed, endurance, power, strength, etc. I was able to dip my toes in a little of everything. I am currently working with Extreme Athletics with the formula that I believe works best for surfing and I am always feeling fitter and healthier.

Conscious Connection: What has it been like on the ASP World Championship Surf Tour?

Courtney Conlogue: Definitely a change in scenery! 🙂 I travel around the world all year competing, training, recovering and during my off days when I find the spare time I love to explore and venture off the beaten path. I have had to learn a lot about travel, ways to avoid jet lag and all of the other things that come with traveling. A big one is getting used to living out of a suitcase. I have really enjoyed going to new places and meeting people around the world and gaining friendships on every continent. Competing against the top women in the world is exciting and always a challenge that I like to take head on.

Conscious Connection: What is the biggest challenge you’ve had to overcome to get to where you are today?

Courtney Conlogue: Training when the surf is bad and getting out there when no one else bothers to go out especially in the winter. Dealing with the board fees around the world and I’m still trying to master that one!

Conscious Connection: What kind of boards have you been riding these days?

Courtney Conlogue: I ride Tim Stamps boards. We are always experimenting on my equipment and trying to reach perfection. I find it is very important to have a great relationship with your shaper especially when you’re an athlete on the World Tour. Having the right equipment is extremely crucial because every wave can be surfed if you have the right board.

Conscious Connection: Favorite surf spot/wave and why?

Courtney Conlogue: I am still searching for my dream wave. 🙂

Conscious Connection: That wave looks pretty dreamy if you ask me. Any advice for people looking to take their surfing to the next level?

Courtney Conlogue: Train and practice! It’s very basic. If you want to get to that next level you have to put a little extra time and invest in getting better. It won’t happen overnight. You just keep working at it and you will start feeling the changes and seeing the results.

Conscious Connection: Right on! So where do you see yourself in five years?

Courtney Conlogue: With a World Title traveling the world doing what I love, helping others, making change where I can and being all I can be.

Conscious Connection: Awesome stuff! Keep it at and I’m sure you’ll be successful. Thanks for taking the time to speak with us here at Conscious Connection.

Courtney Conlogue: It’s been a pleasure. Thank you for having me!
