I had the pleasure of meeting Hollis, a clairvoyant and hypnotherapist, while on a retreat in the beautiful mountains of Mt. Shasta, California.  As a part of our ongoing effort to produce enlightening content that has a direct practical benefit to you, our reader, I asked Hollis if she would be interested in doing an interview for the new section of our magazine titled “Enlightened Interviews”.

She promptly agreed and I was thrilled at the prospect of gaining some insight into her work as a clairvoyant, and also how we can put into practice some easy steps to improve our relationships and live from a state of higher awareness. As we all struggle to live more consciously, we are fortunate to have people like Hollis who can offer practical advice for living lives of greater purpose, happiness and success simply by following subtle guidance from our own higher selves and learning to use our thoughts to manifest our full potential.

Conscious Connection: Can you provide a brief bio for yourself and describe how you got started as a clairvoyant?

Hollis Polk: I am a clairvoyant/coach, who has been helping people create lives and businesses they love for 15 years. To do this, I blend neurolinguistic and hypnotherapy techniques, decision science, clairvoyance, and the common sense learned in over 30 years of business experience.  I am a Master Practitioner of neurolinguistics, a certified hypnotherapist, and have a bachelor’s degree in engineering from Princeton and a Harvard MBA. I am also a successful real estate broker and investor, and have owned and run a number of businesses, including a restaurant and wholesale bakery, and a wood-stove wholesaler. I teach classes in intuition development and development of body/mind, heart and soul, and offer one-on-one personal and professional coaching.

How I got started as a clairvoyant is a really long story.

In my early 20s, when I had just moved to the Bay Area, I came down with what is today called Chronic Fatigue Immune Dysfunction Syndrome, but back then didn’t even have a name. I was very lucky in that I got to a doctor, a professor at UC San Francisco Medical School, who told me that:

  • I was in fact sick,
  • I wasn’t making it up,
  • It was probably a virus, and
  • I should just go home and do the best I could because medical science could not help me.

At the time, I was a member of a book group with just a few friends. Eventually, we began to do group meditations as part of our regular meetings.

One Sunday afternoon six or seven of us were sitting quietly in a circle when I began to have a vision of a woman riding a bicycle down a dirt road in between green hills. As I saw this, another member of the group began to describe it aloud. I was shocked! When she stopped talking, I took up the story.  As I spoke, I heard a quick intake of breath from another member of the group and I knew that someone else was seeing what I was seeing. This went on, with all of us experiencing the same reality, for probably 15 or 20 minutes.

When I thought about it, I could only come up with two explanations for this. The first was that we were all experiencing the same thing telepathically. The second was that this was some sort of past life in which we had all taken part. Neither of these things matched my view of reality. I spent the next few days in a kind of a daze.

Eventually I was ‘led’ to a clairvoyant training program, where I studied for three years.  I took classes one night a week and then did readings every Saturday afternoon.  It was great training!

In order to do a psychic reading, you have to be in the same lowered brain wave state as that of meditation.  Today, there are over 3,300 studies that show the efficacy of meditation for all kinds of health issues, including high blood pressure, heart disease, and even dental caries. But at the time, these studies did not exist. All I knew was that I felt better when I did a reading.  I actually got healthier when I did readings, so of course I did more of them.

When I started, I did readings for free, as did my best friend.  Eventually enough people came to each of us that it was beginning to suck our time and our energy.  She and I made a pact that we would do readings by donation.  People could pay what they wished, but they had to pay something.  I used this money to buy books and my Tibetan bell, that sort of thing.

Fast forward a couple of years.  At the time I was a real estate broker (actually I still am) and I was alone and hungry at lunch time one day. I had nothing to read – and I never don’t have anything to read, so I went to a Chinese restaurant and read whatever was at hand, which turned out to be the SF Weekly. Paging through that, I came across an ad that said “Psychics – Work from Home”.  I thought, “This will be more interesting than watching television at night and hey, I’ll get paid!” So I applied and was accepted by the Psychic Readers Network.

I did readings several nights a week, usually just one or two at a time. I began to get these phone calls that said things like “Congratulations! You’re number 21.” or “Congratulations! You’re number 43.” Or “Congratulations! You’re number 16.”  I never knew what these meant, but finally, one week I happened to be at home when the call came. I said to the caller, “What are you talking about?” And she said “Oh, you have the 30th best call length average of any of our 2500 psychics this week.” That’s when I knew I was good at doing readings!

At the time, the mid-90s, PRN was charging $4/minute. That was a lot of money, so people who were not happy hung up immediately. That meant that call length was actually a pretty good proxy for the quality of the reading.

Real estate was not doing very well at the time, so eventually I decided that if I worked 25 hours a week I would at least know that my rent was paid. So I began to work from 6:30 each morning until 10:50. I would do a call and hang up and the phone would ring again within 45 seconds. It was great practice! You might even call it boot camp for psychics.

After I had done this for six months or so, I realized that I was a Harvard MBA, was working for $20 an hour, while being charged out at $240 per hour. This did not make a lot of sense to me, so I got a credit card facility and went out on my own. Shortly thereafter, I met the man who is now my husband. He did a website for me and that’s how I went into business.

I was already a practitioner of neurolinguistics (NLP). I began to see that many of the issues that people called about were not things I should read psychically, but rather their own issues, which could be healed using NLP.  So I began to add this to my practice.  Eventually I became certified as a coach as well. And somewhere along the line I learned hypnosis, too, although that was more to work with groups.

Conscious Connection: What advice can you offer my readers who are looking to better their relationships?

Hollis Polk: That’s really complicated – which is why I do a radio show about relationships! But if I were giving only one word of advice, it would be “LISTEN”. Listen with an open heart and without thinking about what you’re going to say.

Conscious Connection: How is it possible to change our lives in only ten minutes a day?

Hollis Polk: Much of what happens in our lives is a result of our habits, whether they are physical habits or habits of thought. If you want to have healthier teeth and gums, you brush and floss daily.  It’s the same thing with mental habits.  Sometimes just realizing that you don’t have to be afraid, or angry, or whatever, when a parent says something nasty for the umpteenth time is enough to change it. And you learn that in under ten minutes. Many things are coded in our neurology – and those change quickly (in under 10 minutes!), not slowly.

That’s why I titled my blog, as I did — the blog contains simple exercises, even thoughts, which you can use to change your life for the better, simply, easily, and pleasurably.

Conscious Connection: How can people develop their own psychic awareness and open a channel with their higher self?

Hollis Polk: Everyone has some intuitive, or psychic, abilities. It is normal to get “psychic information” beyond what you can perceive through your five senses. That information is always available to everyone. But few people pay attention to it. There are three keys to developing your psychic awareness:

  • Allow it – Acknowledge that you are getting information, notice what it is and how you get it. Everyone gets his or her information a little differently.
  • Practice it — Try out your abilities on low consequence items. For example, ask yourself how many items will be in today’s mail. Notice how you get your information, and if it’s right or wrong. If you’re wrong, who cares?
  • Get feedback — The mail will have whatever number of items it has – that’s feedback. After a while, you’ll learn what types of things you tend to be accurate about, and how you get your information.

Conscious Connection: Why is goal setting important and what are some tips for utilizing creative visualization successfully?

Hollis Polk: If you don’t know where you’re going, how are you going to know when you get there? You have to have goals to set direction and measure progress.

One way to set a goal is to visualize it – or more accurately, sensualize it. That is, bring in not only the visual representation of your goal, but all the other senses as well. When you have attained your goal, what will that look like? And also – what will it feel like? Sound like? Smell like? Perhaps even taste like?

Conscious Connection: What are the benefits of a chakra reading?

Hollis Polk: Chakras are energy centers which correspond with places in your physical body. Each has its own emotional, psychological or energy level meaning. A chakra reading will give you a snap shot of how you are functioning in your own body and in your own life, perhaps pointing to issues that can be healed so you can create the life you really want. Conscious Connection: How is it that we can alter the past simply by shifting our perspective?

Hollis Polk: You don’t actually alter the past – rather, you change how you interpret what happened, what it means to you, and how you carry it in your energy field, which is your unconscious mind. Since you create your reality from your beliefs, many of which are unconscious, you create your future differently when you have re-framed the meaning of your past.
